I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch N 56 of the
21 June enclosing a correspondence with the
Hudsons Bay Company's
Agent at
Fort Victoria on the subject of the claims of the Company to lands
adjacent to their Forts in
British Columbia.
These claims have
been referred by mutual consent, to the Judicial
Committee of the Privy Council, and until the decision of that Tribunal
is obtained no effectual remedy for the inconvenience which you
represent can be applied. But it would be desirable in the meantime
that you should abstain as much as possible from dealing with land
claimed by the Company so as to avoid increasing their claim to
compensation should their title
to the land be eventually
affirmed.
