With reference to your despatch N 25 of the
8 of
November last, I have to acquaint you that I have appointed
M George H. Cary of Lincoln's Inn, a Gentleman who has been highly recommended to me by the Solicitor
General to
be Attorney General in
British Columbia.
I have informed
M Cary that the Salary of the office will be
Four hundred pounds per annum to be increased hereafter if the Colonial
Revenues will allow; that he will be permitted to enjoy private
practice; and that should the future Legislature of the Colony consider the permission
of private practice, under the circumstances of the Colony inexpedient, Her Majesty's
Government will require that some
addition addition should be made to the present Salary.
