Lugard responds to earlier correspondence on the cost
of the Military Force stationed in [the] Colony of British Columbia, noting that Herbert agrees with Newcastle's proposed response to Douglas on the matter. Part of Blackwood's minutes suggest to Write to Home Office, or the Chief Secy for
Ireland, to say the Irish Constabulary will not be
needed for B. Columbia.
I have laid before the Secretary of State for War your
Letter of the 10th instant together with its enclosure
from the Governor of British Columbia relative to the cost
of the Military Force stationed in that Colony.
In reply I am to request that you will acquaint the Duke
of Newcastle that MrMr Sidney Herbert concurs in the
terms of the answer which His Grace proposes to return to
Governor Douglas on this subject.
Mr Merivale
1. Now send the proposed despatch to the Governor.
2. Write to Home Office, or the Chief Secy for
Ireland, to say the Irish Constabulary will not be
needed for B. Columbia.
3. And I should suggest sending the Treasury a copy
of the Govrsdesph 8576, (with the Duke of
Duke of
Newcastle's ansr) as it seems to explain the
financial position of the Governor, & His Grace's
despatch testifies to the desire of this Office to
keep the Governor up to the mark as to economy.
