Sir,
In reply to your Letter of the 12th Instant, enclosing a copy of a Despatch from the Governor of British Columbia, advising a further draft of £5,200 upon this Board, on account of Colonial pay due to the Royal Engineers, from the 1st of September 1858, to the 31st May last, and of £1,200 on account of Working pay due to the force of Royal Marines serving in the Colony; I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury, to acquaint you, for the information of the DukeManuscript imageDuke of Newcastle, that the Paymaster General has been authorized to accept and pay the Bills which have been drawn for these sums, and to charge the same, for the present, to the grant for British Columbia, the particulars of the respective Bills not having been stated.

It will be better not to Inform the Governor that these Bills have been accepted until we receive an answer from the Admiralty as to the authority for granting working pay to the Marines, one of these Bills being for that service?
