Briseis, while on route from England to British Columbia.
I have the honor by request of Colonel Moody commanding the
Royal Engineers in British Columbia to forward herewith to your
Grace a statement of the losses incurred by the Officers attached
to his party, upon the occasion of the destruction by fire of

Mr Merivale
I suppose that there is some general rule as to granting
military officers compensation for private property lost on
board ships engaged by the Govt as Transports. Ascertain
from the War Office what the rule is?
Draft, Elliot to Under-Secretary, War Office, 5 January 1860,
forwarding copy of the despatch and requesting information on
policy for reimbursing the loss of private articles.
