Douglas transmits Mayne's report on
an overland journey of Survey in the Districts of British Columbia, bordering on the Thompson, Fraser, and Harrison Rivers,a map from which Douglas suggests be
lithographed in England and distributed there, and a few sets sent out for sale and distribution in the Colony.

I have the honor of transmitting for your information the
Report of an overland journey of Survey in the Districts of
British Columbia, bordering on the Thompson, Fraser, and Harrison
Rivers
Rivers, undertaken at my request by Captain Richards of Her
Majesty's Ship Plumper, and conducted by Lieutenant Richard
Mayne, of that Ship, who has performed the service on which
he was detached with a degree of success and ability, creditable
alike to the talents and enterprise of that useful and active Officer.

information and is accompanied by a valuable explanatory map of
the Countries described.
3. I would submit how desirable it would be to

This is the report of an exploration by an Officer of the Navy—a son of Sir R. Mayne. Acke—copy to Land Bd—& Geogl Socy. Specimens when they arrive, to the Geologl Society. Ask the War Office to lithograph the Map—of which send some copies to the Govr as asked for.

Sir Richard Mayne would be very glad if the Duke of Newcastle would allow a copy of this despatch, and of the enclosure (which we can send in print) being forwarded to the Admiralty, the object being that the Lieutenant, his son, who made the exploration may stand well in the estimation
of his superiors at the Admiralty.
I perceive no objection myself to complying with Sir Richard's
request, but I explained to him that we could do no more than
submit the question to His Grace, & execute his instructions.
