Burke to Lytton
Mariposa, California
Decr 14, 1858 The Right Honorable, Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, Bart

Sir,
Mr. P. Cadell addressed a note to me, dated London Oct. 1858, in which he intimated a wish, that I would write You a brief note concerning his pursuits and standing, while in California.
Without being able to perceive very distinctly, that a letter from me, upon this subject, will be entitled to much consideration from You—Yet I have not stopped to ask myself "what will he do with it," but have proceeded to comply with Mr C's request.
With sufficient regard to brevity, I can only say; that I have been well acquainted with Mr C. since 1850. He was engaged, the whole time of his residence in California, in active mining operations, or in theManuscript image investigation and developement of plans for the more successful working of Gold Mining.
With a character for morality unimpeachable—Mr. Cadell was well versed in the philosophy of Gold Mining.
I have the honor to be
