I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your Despatch
               N 5 of the
2 September 1858, forwarding to me copies of
               a correspondence between the
Colonial Office and the Board of

Admiralty, of the dates as per margin, on the subject of
               affording Naval assistance to
British
                  Columbia.

               2. I glean from this correspondence the just appreciation
you have formed of the importance of the Service referred to,
and I feel truly grateful for the great interest Her Majesty's
Government have taken in the protection and advancement of

British Columbia, as is evidenced by the nature of the instructions
which this correspondence has caused to be given to the Commander
in Chief of Her Majesty's Naval Forces in the Pacific.
