Extract from a dispatch sent home by the Venetian
ambassador, Zorzi Guistiniani, dated 17 Jan. 1607 [i.e. 7
Jan. 1608]

La Corte continua tuttavia in trattenimenti del Carnevale et la Regina ha differito
per pochi giorni ancora la rappresentazione del suo balletto con l’ occasione del
quale ha ricevuto questo Sig
nor Ambasciatore del Christianissmo molto disguido, perche hauendo presentito che la Maaesta sua s’ era rissoluta di farui assistere l’ Ambasciatore Cattolico ha fatto ogni sforzo se ben in uano per diuertirla, parendogli che con tali inviti
si dasse nell’ indecisa precedenza che uogliono mantener tra i Principi a questa Corte
grande auantaggio all’ Ambasciatore sopra di esso, onde il Re’ ha procurato molto per trouarui qualche temperamento al
quale pero’ non ha’ uoluto per ancora l’ Ambasciatore prestare l’ assenso: questo accidente e stato causa d’ interrompere il disegno che
aueua fatto la Regina di farui assistere anche l’ Ambasciatore di Vostra Serenita`, il quale gia’ alcuni giorni ⎡mi⎤ fece communicare con me pregandomi di tenerlo
celato per liberarla da quelle molestie che d’ altra parte gli sarrebbono uen ⎡u⎤
te adosso ma perche da i partiti fatti proporre dal Re’ all’ Ambasciatore di francia, egli s’ auede che uoleuano farlo interuenire a qualche altro trattenimento
accompagnandolo con quello dell’ Arciduchi: sopra questo gagliardamente protesto’,
che se gli raddoppiaua il pregiuditio, non solo escludendolo dalla maggior sollennita’,
che era il balletto della Regina, ma anche della piu’ nobile compagnia che era quella
dell’ Ambambasciatore della Repubblica il quale si uoleua metter con l’ Ambasciator di spagna per tanto meglio honorarlo, affermando che questo sarrebbe stato il piu’
euidente segno d’ ogn’ altro dell’auuantaggio, che s’ intendeua di dar a’ quello.
Io credo che per mitigare in qualche parte il disgusto che riceue l’ Ambasciatore
di francia, et per leuargli il sospetto che egli ha preso che l’ accompagnare quello
di Vostra Serenita’ con Spagna sia fatto per suo auuantaggio si rissolueranno di non inuitare a’ questa
sollennita’ altri che l’ Ambre di Spagna, perche quanto a quello dell’ Arciduchi, non hanno sin’hora dimostrato
intentione alcuna di farlo: anzi come ho’ detto a’ Vost ra Sereni ta’ sarrebbe stato sicuramente chiamato il suo, se questo accidente di Francia non l’hauesse disturbato
Translation
The court is still occupied with carnival entertainments. The
Queen
has put off her masque for a few days. This action has caused the greatest disappointment
to the French ambassador, who, having foreseen that her Majesty was thinking of inviting
the Spanish ambassador, did all he could to change her mind, albeit in vain. He considered
that such invitations would give a signal advantage to that ambassador over himself,
in the unclear precedence that they want to maintain between the two crowns in this
court. The King
has tried to find a compromise solution but, as yet, the French ambassador declines
to consent. This upset has interfered with the
Queen
's intention of inviting Your Highness's[i.e. the Venetian]ambassador, an intention
she had communicated to me some days ago, begging me to keep it secret in order to
save her from all the badgering which might descend on her from elsewhere. Since the
French ambassador understood from the King
’s proposals that it was thought to have him attend some other entertainment in the
company of the Archducal ambassador, he protested vigorously, declaring that this
was a double injury, for he was not only excluded from the greater event, the
Queen
’s masque, but also from the nobler company, that of the Republic’s ambassador, whom
they intended to invite with the Spanish ambassador, the more to honour him. He claimed
that this was the clearest sign of all of the favour that was intended to be given
to the Spanish ambassador. I believe that in order to appease the French
ambassador to some extent, and to dispel his suspicion that Your Serenity's ambassador
was invited along with
Spain
the more to honour Spain, they will invite no one but the Spanish ambassador. As for
the Archducal ambassador, they have so far not shown any intention of doing it. On
the contrary, as I have already told you, yours would definitely have been invited,
had it not been for this upset.
