Se bene il Re si trattiene a’Roiston sotto titolo delle caccie intendo pero’ che altro
piu’ uero fine lo fa dimorare tanto in quel loco, dove se ne sta’ quasi sempre retirato
non con altra compagnia, che di un suo solo decano huomo nelle scienze consumato assai,
dicendosi che essendo capitato qui un libro<composto>dal Gesuita Personio nel quale procura di persuadere la liberta del rito cattolico
in questo regno, gusta la maesta sua per una certa emulatione di dottrina, che ha’ havuto sempre con li scritti
di quellchuomo di affaticarsi lei medesima nella formatione della risposta; dovera
pero’ riddursi per la sollenn ita del natale nella Citta’ al qual tempo prepara la Regina ad istanza del Re’ di
rappresentare lei medesima con sole le piu’ principali Dame della Corte un molto superbo

Translation
Although the king
remains at Royston in order to hunt, I understand he has another purpose. He lives
a secluded life, except for the company of a Dean, a very learned man. It is said
that a book written by the Jesuit Persons has appeared here, in which he tries to
advocate the freedom of Catholic worship in this kingdom, and the king
wants to reply out of the rivalry of learning that he always has for that man’s writings.
But he must come to
London
for Christmas. At the king
’s request,the queen
is preparing a most superb masque with only the principal ladies of the court.
