Report of the festivities in a dispatch sent home by the
Venetian ambassador, dated 1st August [i.e. 22 July]

2da Ritorno’ il Re’ alcuni giorni sono nella Citta’, doue gionto ando’ la medesima
mattina a pranzo con una di queste compagnie di mercanti, dalla quale fu’ col Principe
suo figliuolo, tutta la Corte, et una grande moltitudine di gentilhuomini molto splendidamen te conuitato, essendouisi anche per ordine suo ritrouati li deputati di Ollanda,
che sedeuono con li Sig
nori del Consiglio a tauola et stanza separata da quella di sua Maesta’ E fu’ quel giorno
in questa compagnia associato il Principe con le medesime cerimonie, co le quali alcuni giorni prima era stato in un’ altra assonto lo stesso
Re’, il quale con queste maniere populari si ua’ mirabilmente aquistando l’ amore
de sua sudditi, et in particolare degli habitatori di questa Citta’, doue fermatosi
pochi giorni per dar il compimento a queste negotiationi dei deputati, che ho riverentemente significato parti’ per la continuatione del suo progresso con pensiero di starsene
alcune settimane lontano.
Translation
The king
came back to the city
some days ago. He dined that same morning with one of the Merchant Companies. He was
sumptuously entertained, along with his son
the
Prince
, the court, and a great retinue of nobles. The Dutch deputies were present by his
special order, and sat along with the members of the Council, at a table in a separate
chamber. That same day
the Prince
was admitted to the guild with the same ceremony as the king
himself had been associated to another guild, a few days before; and by these popular
arts the king
is winning the love of his people, and more especially of the people of this city,
where he has been staying for a few days for the completion of this affair of the
deputies, which I have already reported. He left to continue his progress with the
intention of staying a few weeks away.
