Theobalds
festivities, in a dispatch sent
home by the Venetian ambassador

] 1607. It is numbered 23 in a parchment bound
collection of letters written 1 March 1608-28 Feb. 1609, occupying pp. 80-81.
Li passati giorni andarono queste Maestà accompagnate dal Principe di Giainville, et da quasi tutti li Signori della Corte a Tibol palazzo del Conte di Salsberi` alienato da lui in cambio di un’
altro[sic]alla Regina, la quale con questa occasione prese con molta pompa et sollennità il possesso di quel loco, doue furono con splendore ueramente regio trattenuti per quel giorno dal sudetto Conte, che al loro partire dono’ a
quel Principe alcuni bellissimi cavalli usando il Re’ ogni termine di humanita’ et
di cortesia nel trattenimento di esso, ne lassando passar giorno senza qualche spettacolo
di giostre, di caccie, o d’altro per honorarlo egli fra pochi giorni partira’, ma
si ragiona che possi con qualche honorevole stipendio di questo Re’ ricondursi fra
poco tempo, et fermarsi qui.
Translation
Some days ago their Majesties, along with
the Prince
de Joinville and most of the court, went to
Theobalds
, which is a palace belonging to the
Earl of Salisbury
. He has made it over to the queen
in exchange for another, and she took solemn possession of it on this occasion with
great pomp. There, they were wonderfully entertained for that day by the Earl; he
gave some magnificent horses to that prince, and entertained the king
with humanity and courtesy. Every day there were jousts or hunting parties to honour
him. He is going to leave in a few days, but it is thought he may come back and stay
here with an honorarium from the king
.
