Report of events surrounding the masque, written by the Tuscan agent
Amerigo Salvetti
, and added to an unbound copy of the dispatch dated
7 March 1630 [i.e. 25 Feb. 1631]
and forwarded to
Niccolo’ Sacchetti, Tuscan ambassador in Vienna. This group of letters were written
18 Dec. 1627-31 Dec.
1632. The dispatch occupies five pages in one and a half folded sheets (extract on
p.
4).
Gli auuisi che uennero di francia la Domenica avanti di questo balletto, toccante
i
travagli della Regina madre, Signor Duca d’ Orleans, et diuersi altri grandi di quell’ Regno,
hauerebbero
disturbato molto le allegrezze della Regina, se Il Re non
hauesse comandato strettamente ad ognuno di non dirgliene motto fin’ che non hauesse
fatto Il suo balletto.
Translation
The news that came from
France
the Sunday before this masque touching the troubles of the
Queen
Mother
, the Duke of Orleans
, and other great noblemen of that realm would have greatly disturbed the happiness
of the
Queen
, had not the King
strictly commanded that no one should say anything to her until she had finished
her masque.
