Report of the masque, in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador
Alvise Valaresso, dated 3 Feb. [i.e.
24 Jan.] 1623. It is numbered 35 and occupies pp. 256-61 (extract on
p. 261).
Domenica passata si fece il balletto, danzato dal Signor
Principe con dieci altri caualieri, i quali doppo_ certi _ preludi e
comparse di non molto rileuo, trauestiti scesero in una nuuola dal Cielo. fu' lo
spettacolo di qualche pompa e bellezza. ma non arriuo' gia' al segno reale. Duro'
puoco
men che sino a' giorno. Sua Maesta' ne gode' molto. Sua
Altezza mostro' gratia e dispostezza
agilita

interuenimo il Signo r Ambasciator di Frantia et Io. che pur restai con quest' occasione regalato di sontuosissima
cenna dal Signo r Duca e Duchessa di Lenos. Sono regali che non si
riceuono, senza corrispondenza.
Translation
Last Sunday the masque took place, danced by
the Prince
with ten other gentlemen. After some preliminaries and entries of no great
account, they descended in disguise from the sky in a cloud. It was a beautiful and
sumptuous spectacle but not quite attaining the royal standard. It lasted almost until
day, and His Majesty enjoyed it very much;
His Highness showed grace and agility. The French ambassador and I were present. I
was
offered a very sumptuous supper by the Duke and Duchess of Lennox; such gifts are
not received without a return.
