Postponement of the masque, reported in a dispatch sent
home by the Venetian ambassador
Alvise Valaresso, dated 27 [i.e.
17] Jan. 1623. It is numbered 34 and occupies pp. 251-54 (extract on
p. 254).
Dalla Domenica passata fu' rimesso' il Balletto a' questa prima uentura, per causa
o' sia pretesto della gotta di Sua Maesta' .Con l' esempio degli dui Ambasciatori di Frantia e
di Spagna, fu' anch'io , presa buona occasione a' uedere ballare il Signo
r Prencipe , il qual nel fine in lingua francese, non piu' usata meco,
con molta ⎡humanita'⎤

mi ringratio ch'hauessi honorato i suoi essercitii.
Translation
The masque has been postponed from this Sunday to the next, because of His Majesty’s
gout, or so it is pretended.
Following the example of the French and Spanish
ambassadors, I too seized the opportunity to see
the Prince
dance. At the end he thanked me with great courtesy for having honoured his
rehearsal with my presence. He spoke to me in French, a language that he never uses
with me.
