Preparations for the masque reported in a dispatch sent
home by the Venetian ambassador
Alvise Valaresso, dated 20 [i.e.
10] Jan. 1623. It is numbered 32, and occupies pp. 242-43 (extract on
p. 243).
La giornata di Domenica che uiene e' destinata sin hora per il Balletto del
Signor Prencipe. Siamo inuitati l' Ambasciatore di
Frantia et io. Quello di Spagna, dicono, che si ha' iscusato
ho ben

credeua ch' egli fosse l' inuitato. Oltre all' altre ragioni, perche essendo nuouo,

si e' trouato piu' a' simili sollennita'.Io subodoro ch'egli
uoleua esserui solo. Certo per questo tocca a me nella presente occasione, ho '
riconosciuto un particolar et amorosissimo affetto nella persona di questo Signor

Translation
Next Sunday has now been designated for
the Prince
’s masque. The French ambassador and
I are invited. The Spaniard, they say, excused himself, but had earlier gone to see
the
rehearsal privately. Everybody thought he would be invited, because among other reasons
he had never been present at any solemn ceremony before, having been recently appointed
as ambassador. I suspect that he wished to be there alone. Because of this, on this
occasion it is my turn, and I observe a peculiar affection for your highness’s interests
in the
Lord Chamberlain
.
