Plans for invitations to the masque reported in a dispatch
sent home by the Venetian ambassador

Jan 1623. It appears in a parchment bound
collection of letters written 11 March 1622-24 Feb. 1623 and is numbered 31. It occupies
pp. 239-40 (extract on p. 240).
La settimana ventura queest' Altezzza fara' il suo
balletto. Alcuna uolta gia' segui', ch'inuitandouisi l' Ambasciato r di
Spagna, si lascio' quello di Vostra Sererenita'. Il che'
con ragione era a' dubitarsi che potesse, tanto piu' facilmente seguire al presente,
quando in questa Corte ogn' hor piu' cresce l' auttorita' de' Spagnoli; e ne' spagnoli
le pretensioni coi ministri di Vostra Sererenita' onde
quel che gia' si faceua forse a' caso, et era cosa inosseruabile, haurebbe hora l'
effetto o' almen l' apparenza di pregiuditio per l' uno o di auantaggio per gl' altri.
Dalle quali considerationi mosso, io con circonspetta anticipatione mi
sempre
ho
ho' maneggiato in manierabis, che sono assicurato d'
hauere in ogni modo l' inuito; poiche per le difficolta' solite, tra
Spa
Frantia3 e Spagna resta ancor dubbio qual di questi due Ambasciatori debba interuenirui.
Translation
His Highness will give his masque next week. Sometimes Your Highness’s ambassador
has been left out when the Spaniard was invited and this might well happen on this
present occasion, as the influence of the Spaniards at this court grows greater and
greater, as do their pretensions against
your ministers. Therefore, what once seemed to happen by chance, and was not
important,may now be or appear a prejudice to one
and an advantage to the other. Moved by these considerations I have contrived to get
a
reassurance that I will be invited in any case,
since, because of the usual disputes between
France
and Spain, it is uncertain which of them
will be present there.
