XXIII Inghilterra, 1622, Girolamo Lando, Alvise Valaresso Ambasciatori
Postponement of the masque, mentioned in a dispatch sent
home by the Venetian ambassador
Girolamo Lando, on 18 [i.e. 8]
March 1622. It appears in a parchment bound collection of letters ranging 11
March 1622-24 February 1623, and occupies pp. 13-19 (extract on p. 17).
Translation
At
Theobalds
, the King
’s gout grew worse. It has kept him confined almost all his life, and it was
aggravated by his irregularities and perhaps by his own anxieties, as negotiations
are
not proceeding as they should. The rehearsal of the masque has been called off at
the
court, much business has been postponed, and
the audiences of ambassadors are put off. But as he is now much better I hope to see
him
in a few days, as he told me he wanted.
