Plans for one or more masques reported in a dispatch sent
home by the Venetian ambassador
Girolamo Lando, on 30 [i.e.
20] Dec. 1621. The dispatch belongs to a parchment bound collection
of letters written 9 March 1621-25 February 1621 and is numbered 195. It occupies
pp.
317-320 (extract on pp. 317-318), and is ciphered.
hanno moderato un poco gl' affetti appassionati, et meritato, che le inuiaro,
doppo' hauere rissolutione, et registrati alcuni protesti rileuanti che pure possono
riuscire come intendo poco grati alla Maesta' Sua, altri quattro deputati
per renderne
le
gratie con dimostratione di repezzata
concordia, sospendendo la loro ridutione nell' ordinaria feria di Natale finoalla
ottaua di febraro, al qual tempo ella ha' obligato la sua regia
parola, sotto il suo sigillo di riconuocarli, cosi per tale spatio, segondo il solito
si
depòranno qui tutti gl' altri pensieri fuor, che quelli dei baletti, et di sontuosi
conuiti con consumo di quell' oro, quale ritornerebbe in uita chi si languisse, et
con
la perdita del tempo di maggior ualore, et da maggiormente stimarsi in
uantaggio, et in esultatione degli Innimici.
Translation
[These letters]tempered their[the MPs']passions somewhat. After
having passed a resolution and registering some important protests which, I understand,
will not please His Majesty very much, they
sent four more deputies to thank him and express the renewal of harmony. They adjourned
over Christmas until 8th
February, at which date the King
pledged his royal word under his seal to convene a meeting again. In this space of
time, every thought will be put aside as usual, except for masques and sumptuous
banquets. Enough money will be spent to revive those who languish, and time will be
wasted (even more precious), to the advantage and delight of their enemies.
