Extract from a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador, Nicolo Molin, describing
preparations for the Christmas season 1604-5. It is dated 29 [i.e. 19] Dec. 1604 and
numbered 83, and occupies fols. 284-287 (extract on fol. 284).
Qui si ua’ preparando di far le Crisme, che sono le feste di Natale, che sara’ Martedi’
all’ uso antico con molte solennita’ non solo conforme al loro ordinario, ma molto
piu’ ancora , poiche qui si troua il Duca di Holsden fratello della Regina, la quale
mette in ordine una mascherata, che le costera’ intorno a’ 25 mila scudi, in Corte si ua’ discorrendo, come si possa far, perche li Ambasciatori possono
esser presenti a’ queste feste, ma non uolendo sua Maesta’ dichiararsi in alcuna maniera
sopra la precedenza tra’ Francia , et Spagna, si tiene per certo, che nissuno sara’
chiamato , et se qualcheduno hauera’ un poco di curiosita’ di uederle, non potra’
far’ altro, che andarui priuatamente; La Regina finite che saranno queste feste, il
che sara’ per la Candelora, pensa di ritirarsi a Grinuich per non si mouer piu’ di
la’, sino a’ tanto che non habbia partorito, continuando la sua grauidanza molto felicemente.

Translation
Here they are preparing to celebrate Christmas, which will be next Tuesday (according
to the old calendar), with many ceremonies. It will be more sumptuous than usual,
because the Duke of Holstein, the
Queen
’s brother, is here. She is arranging a masque, which will cost about 25000 crowns.
At court they are discussing how the ambassadors can be present at these festivities.
Since His Majesty does not wish to take a position regarding precedence between
France
and Spain, it is almost certain that no one will be invited. If anyone wanted to see
these ceremonies out of curiosity, he would only be able to attend privately. Once
these festivities are over, at Candlemas, the
Queen
will go to Greenwich and stay there till her child is born. Her pregnancy continues
happily.
