Report of the
News from the New World
in a dispatch sent home by the Savoy agent, Giovanni
Battista Gabaleone, on 19 [i.e. 9] January 1620.
The dispatch is unbound and belongs to a series of letters
written by Gabaleone; it occupies ten pages in three folded sheets (extract on p.
3).
The passage "Inghilterra…Piemonte" is in cipher, with the
deciphering written above.
Translation
Last Thursday (their Twelfth Night)
the prince
performed his masque at court. It was
beautiful in the English fashion, but it cannot compare with Piedmontese festivals.
I
would not enter into details so as not to weary your Highness with a long discourse.
