Archivio di Stato, Venezia,
XXI Inghilterra, 1620 Girolamo Lando, Senato Secreta
Invitations to the repeat of
News from the New World
, reported in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador
Girolamo Lando, on 13 [i.e. 3]
March 1620. It is numbered 49, and occupies pp. 8-10 (extract on p. 8).
no ri Stati hanno hauuto l' inuito.
Translation
It seems His Majesty was not completely
satisfied with the arguments laid before him by ambassador Dohna
concerning the deposition of Ferdinand from the throne of Bohemia
and the new election of Frederick, although recently he was
assured that that kingdom was not hereditary. He has taken up the dispute again with
the
ambassador here in
London
. They have had long conversations and His
Majesty raised many objections. However, he does not say anything yet nor has he
replied to him. Dohna had the satisfaction of seeing the King
toasting the new King of Bohemia in his
presence at
Theobalds
, concerning which His Majesty committed
everybody to secrecy. Thus, amongst the clouds and dark sky of the king
’s resolution, there appear distant gleams of sudden hope. These could rightly be
compared to lightning, as no sooner do they appear than they vanish. Dohna had the
honour to be invited to the last masque held by
the Prince
on the day of Carnival, according to their dating. No other ambassador was
invited, except him and ambassador Caron of the States.
