Fallout from the masque, reported in a dispatch sent home by the Tucan agent, Amerigo
Salvetti
, on 7 Feb. [i.e. 28 Jan.] 1618. The dispatch occupies 2 pages of a single folded
sheet (extract on pp. 1-2).
Si tratta che l’ Ambasciatore di Francia deua partir presto, et che sia stato richiamato
mediante il non esser piu’ per molto tempo Ambasciatore di questo Re in Francia, ne
uedersi qua’ uolonta’ di mandarnene, Ma l’ Ambasciatore pare che habbia caro si creda
che sia stato richiamato per disgusto che habbino hauuto in Francia del non esser
stato inuitato al balletto dell’ Epifania, hauendo chiamato quello di Spagna in suo
luogo.
Translation
It is rumoured that the French ambassador must leave shortly. He has been called
back as no ambassador from this King has been appointed in
France
for some time, nor do they seem inclined to send one. However, the ambassador seems
happy for it to be believed that he was recalled because in
France
they were disappointed that he was not invited to the masque on Twelfth Night, having
invited the Spanish ambassador in his place.
