Account of the masque in a dispatch sent home by the Tuscan agent, Amerigo Salvetti

niente alla grandíespettatione che síhaueua, Gli Ambasciatori di Spagna et Uenetia furno conuitati, et se bene questí anno, segondo lí uso di
questa corte toccaua aí quelí di spagna ad esser conuitato, non per questo resta che
lí Ambasciatore di francia non dia fuora euidenti segni dí esser disgustato. La maestaí della Regina
non solo non uscií fuora al balletto, ma ne anche sí eí uoluta lasciare mai uedere.
In tutte queste feste di Natale, non gia che la sia Indisposta, ma uogliono che piuí
presto proceda da disgusti particolari. Il Caualiere Quaratesi, se bene licentiato, sento che andoí Incognito al balletto

[...]and yesterday evening, Twelfth Night,
the Prince
performed his masque, which did not meet the audience’s highest expectations at all.
The ambassadors of
Spain
and Venice were invited, and although this year it was
Spain
’s turn to be invited, according to this court’s custom, the French ambassador showed
evident sign of being offended with it. Her Majesty the
Queen
did not attend the masque, and refused to let herself be seen at any of these Christmas
festivities. She is not indisposed, but is thought rather displeased at something.
I hear that the Cavalier Quaratesi, although he has resigned, went to the masque incognito.
