Money-raising for the masque described in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambasador Piero Contarini, on 29 [i.e. 19] Dec. 1617 . The dispatch is numbered 50 in a parchment bound collection of letters written between 2 March 1617-2 Feb. 1618. It occupies pages 217-218 (extract on p. 217).







Si rende ogni giorno piu' difficile il modo di trouar qui danaro, benche le consultationi siano sopra di ciò frequentissime , essendo grandemente accresciuti gli debiti, et gli interessi, ne punto diminuita la natural prodigalità della Maesta' Sua, hora per hauerne qualche somma per un Baletto, che deue far il Prencipe, et per li ordinarij bisogni della Casa del Re' si trauaglia non poco.

Translation

Every day it is becoming more difficult to raise money, although frequent discussions are held on the subject. Debts and interest have increased greatly, but His Majesty's natural prodigality has not diminished. They are working hard to find money for the Prince 's masque and for the ordinary expenses of the royal household.
