Prince Henry
's Barriers
, in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador
Marco Antonio Correr, on
15 [i.e. 5] Jan. 1610. The dispatch,

Domenica doppo’ essersi danzato fu’ publicato alla presenz<a>di tutta la Corte il<Cartello>del Principe per il combatimento della Bariera, che douera’ seguir dimani; et tutta questa settimana
li sei difensori dell’ Altezza Sua hanno tenuta una gran tauola nelle stanze di lei medesima doue piu’ di una uolta sono stati inuitati alcuni de miei gentil’huomini.
Il Re’ et Sua Altezza mandarono martedi’ il Signor Caualierr Lucnor ad inuitarmi cosi’ alla Bariera; como anco a’ cena; et ui si trouera’ medesimamente il Signor Ambasciator di Spagna.

olico; onde per schifare alcun scandalo, o’ mala sodisfattione Sua Maesta’ in luoco della Bariera lo ha’ fatto inuitar
a’ disinar seco per domenica prossima, che sara’ giorno di gran festa.
Translation
On Sunday, after the dance,
the Prince
’s challenge for the combat at barriers was announced in the presence of the whole
court. It is to be held tomorrow. All this week
the Prince
’s six defenders met in his apartments, where some of my gentlemen have been invited
more than once.
On Tuesday, the King
and his Highness sent Lewkenor to invite me to the barriers and to the supper. The
Spanish ambassador will also be present. The ambassador of the States has never been
in the same company as the Spanish ambassador, so to avoid scandal or displeasure
His Majesty has asked him to dinner next Sunday, which is a high festival, instead
of inviting him to the barriers.
