[fol. 2]

Uppon twelfth day at night the Prince did performe his combatt at the Barrier which as it was in the furnitures of armes, apparell, &other preparations uery magnificent &glorious, so was it uery orderly &liuely performed by those Champions; amongst whom the Prince himself, without flatterie, hath gotten the report to haue acquited himself with asmuch dexterie & galanterie, according to his strength, as anie of the rest. He with his fiue fellowe challengers were all in a liuerie of Crimson ueluett with & broad gold Lace; The Assaylants were some fortie: Who the next daye after the combatt, came all in their liuerie uery galantly mounted, & in uery good order, from St. James to Whitehall , to inuite the King. and Queen. to a bankett & a playe which the Prince had prepared for their Majesties in the said house. And so ended our sportes at Court for this tyme; Against Candelmas there is a solemne Maske preparing. In those sportes the Spanish Ambassador had without controllement his full elbowe roome. Of his retreate from hence there is as yett no hotter speeche then there was twoo moneths ago; Staying as I suppose, the con arriuall of your Don Alonso de Velasco , who by his sossegado passo sheweth well from what Countrie he is coming.
