Extract from a dispatch sent home by the Tuscan agent Ottaviano Lotti
, on 22 [i.e. 12] January 1609. The passage comes on

[…]pareva, che la Maesta’ sua hauesse disegnato di trattare così
l’Ambasciato re di Francia, et il prefato di lorena, et far loro
vedere il balletto della Regina, et ne era gia’ sparsa la voce,
ma si è poi inteso, che lo straordinario Ambasciato re Don Fernando de Giron, il quale havendo sempre preceduto all’
Ambasciato re Residente di Spagna, ha’ dato a’ conoscere d’essere
anche egli Ambasciatore di Francia, fece dire a’ Loro
Maesta’ che era venuto espressamente a’ uedere detto balletto, et che
supplicaua le Maestà loro a’ fargliene gratia, trouorno
pero’ questo disperando di dire: il balletto non e’ in ordine diferendolo per i tre
di
febbraio, con disegno che Don Fernando in questo tempo partirà,
et potra’ lo Ambasciato r di Francia esservi chiamato.
Translation
It seemed that His Majesty had planned
to entertain both the French ambassador
and the prefect of Lorraine and to let them see the
Queen’s masque; this rumour had already been spread. However, we were given to
understand that the ambassador extraordinary from
Spain, Don Fernando de Giron, who had always preceded the resident
Spanish Ambassador, claimed that
he had to precede even the French
Ambassador. He asked to let the king
know that he had come expressly to see the
Queen’s masque, and he pleaded with their
Majesties to grant him this favour. However, they found a last-ditch excuse of
saying that the masque was not ready and had to be postponed until the third of
February, hoping Don Fernando will leave by then, so that the French ambassador can
be invited.
