Further postponement of
The Masque of Queens
, in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador, Zorzi Giustiniai. The dispatch
is dated 22 Jan. 1608 [i.e. 12 Jan. 1609]
, and
numbered 68, occupying fols. 185-89 (extract fol. 185).
Questo Signor Ambasciato r estraordinario si ua’ trattenendo qui, e dice non voler partire se non gli arriuano
lettere di Spagna: Non andra’ a trouare il Re a Roiston, per doue parti’ la Maesta’ Sua lunedi’, come haueua detto di uoler fare, non hauendone ella mostrata sodisfattione.
Intendo, che prima del suo partire, gli habbia mossa non so’ che parola di nozze,
di questa Principessa con Sauoia: ma non pero’ tale da farne alcun fondamento sopra:
le viene interpretato, che sia stato un uoler mortificare il discontento et l’opinione
che si fermi per necessitar sua<Maesta’>ad inuitarla alla mascherata della Regina, che per questo rispetto potrebbe esser
in altro tempo differita tutto che ogni giorno la Maesta’ Sua la eserciti et faccia lauorare nelle macchine. Intanto l’ ambasciatore ordinario
non lascia di far molti gagliardi ufficij per esser inuitato, et mette in opera tutti
li suoi fautori, facendosi scudo dell’ Ambasciata straordinaria.
Translation
The ambassador extraordinary is still here and says he will not leave until he receives
letters from
Spain
. He will not go to visit the King
at Royston, which the latter left for on Monday, as he said he would, for His Majesty
did not appear to like it. I have heard that before the King
left he had touched upon something about the English princess’s marriage with the
Duke of Savoy. But this may be unfounded: it is thought that by staying he wants to
compel His Majesty to invite him to the queen
’s masque. Although Her Majesty holds rehearsals and trials of the machinery every
day, the masque might be put off again for this reason. Meantime, the Spanish ambassador
in ordinary makes vigorous efforts to be invited, and he puts in motion all his supporters
and uses the Embassy-Extraordinary as a pretext.
