Preparations for
The Masque of Queens
in a dispatch sent home by the Venetian ambassador, Zorzi Giustiniani. It is dated
9 Jan. 1608 [i.e. 30 Dec. 1608]
and
numbered 64 in a parchment bound collection of letters written between 6 March 1608
and
25 Feb. 1609. It occupies pp. 169-72, with the passage ‘postdimani ... Serenissima
Repubblica’ is ciphered. The extract is on p. 169, the transcription of the ciphered
passage on p.171. In CSPV, ‘strauacante’ is mistranscribed ‘Straordinaria’.
Da Domenica passata in qua’, che secondo il ritto antico si cilibro’ il giorno della

nore, la Corte si ritroua tutta implicata in balli, et Comedie: e la Illustrissima Regina va’ con molto studio programmando una mascherata di molte Dame per il fine
di queste feste, che sara’ hoggi a’ otto, non riguardando a’ spesa alcuna per il desiderio,
che tiene sua Maesta’, come e’ compitissima in tutte le sue attioni, che riesca quanto
meglio sia possibile. Il Re conuito’ mercordi’ mattina l’ Ambasciatore straordinario, che si troua qui per nome del Cath
olico, et de gl’ Arciduchi e u’intervennero gli Ordinari ancora, che per quanto intendo
procurarono di esserui chiamati. Mi fu affirmato da buona parte, che postdimani Sua Maesta’ uoleua convitar
me
il Signor Ambasciato r di Francia, et me coll’ Ambasciato r di Signor Duca di Lorena, ma’ noi habbiamo stimato bene di far destramente diuertire l’ inuito, accio’ che quelli di Spagna,
et Fiandra non attribuissero l’ esser stati chiamati prima a’ maggior‘ honore dell’
Ambasciata ordinaria, non com’ è stato a particolar fauore della strauacante. Hora questi spagnuoli, et Fiamenghi
sta’no in prattica, per assister al balletto della Regina, affermando , che si farebbe
torto a’ quest’ Ambasciata straordinaria, se si lasciasse di chiamarli. Dall’ altra
parte il Signor Ambasciato r di Francia, che fu’ escluso l’ anno passato,<per>qual causa passarono dall’ altra parte del Re’ Christianissimo parole di molta alteratione, ha’ protestato di partir di Corte; senon sara’ inuitato.Io non ho’ stimato bene mostrarmi evidentemente in questo negotio; poiche ho’ hauuta occasione
molto opportuna di far capitar all’ orecchie della Regina, come sia stato trattato
in Spagna l’ Ambasciatore del Re’ d’ Ungaria, fratello dell’ Arciduca Alberto, differentemente da cio’ che
si fa’ con quello della Serenita’ Vostra, et ho’ con questo mezo ritratta un’ ottima dispositione della Maesta’ sua in honorar sempre chi dipende dalla Serenissima Repubblica. Questo Ambasciatore estraordinario doppo’ l’ audienza publica ne hebbe anco una
particolare, io vengo accertato, che l’ ufficio suo si e’ semplicemente istato supra la tregua di Fiandra, como ho’ altre uolte significato alla Signoria Vostra. Di Londra 9 Genn. 1608
Translation
From last Sunday, on which day, according to the old rite, they celebrate Christmas,
the court has been entirely occupied by balls and plays.The
Queen
is deeply engaged in preparing a masque of many ladies to be staged in eight days
time to wind up the festivities. Her Majesty, who is most accomplished in all her
undertakings, is sparing no expense as she wishes it to be as fine as possible. On
Wednesday morning,the
King
gave a banquet to the Ambassador Extraordinary of
Spain
, who is here on the king
’s behalf, and to the Archdukes’ ambassador. The ordinary ambassadors were also present:
I heard that they procured an invitation. A trustworthy source tells me that the day
after tomorrow,His Majesty intended to invite the French ambassador, the ambassador
of Lorraine, and myself, to dinner. However, we thought it best to tactfully put off
the invitation, so as the Spanish and Flemish ambassadors should not attribute the
priority of invitation to the more honourable rank of the Embassy in Ordinary, instead
of to its real cause, the special honour of the Embassy-Extraordinary. These Spanish
and Flemish ambassadors are trying to be invited to the
Queen
’s masque, declaring that it would be a slight to the Extraordinary Embassy if they
were excluded. On the other hand, the French
ambassador, whose exclusion caused his king’s vehement complaint last year, has said
he will immediately leave the court if he is not invited. I thought it best not to
give my opinions overtly, because I had some occasion to let the
Queen
know how the ambassador of the King
of Hungary, who is Archduke Albert’s brother, was treated in
Spain
, that is differently from that of your Highness' ambassador. I thus produced an excellent
disposition in her Majesty to always honour the representatives of the Most Serene
Republic. The Ambassador Extraordinary was privately received by the King
after the public audience. I have been informed that the meeting was about the Flemish
truce only, as I have told you elsewhere.
