LR95d (Early lives) - Aubrey’s Life of Jonson

LR95d (Early Lives) John Aubrey’s Life of Jonson (Bodleian MSS Aubrey 6, fol. 108; 8, fols. 15, 54, 55; 4, fol. 180v; 6, fol. 107)

Extracts from the Bodleian Library Aubrey MSS, edited by Kate Bennett. Aubrey MSS 6-8 are papers constituting the ‘Brief Lives’ written by the antiquary John Aubrey (1626-1697), and which became the basis for Anthony Wood’s life of Jonson in Athenae Oxonienses (1691). Aubrey’s account of Jonson was compiled in 1680, with later additions made in the margins or on later pages. Supplementary material is taken from the Perambulation of Surrey (Aubrey MS 4) and from a letter sent to Aubrey by Izaac Walton (Aubrey MS 6). The present edition reproduces the physical character of Aubrey’s manuscript as closely as possible.
