Warrant for the reversion of the office of Master of the
Revels to
Jonson,
5 Oct. 1621. The possibility of
Jonson
holding this office, which censored plays for production, was dependent upon
Sir George Buck
(or Buc, 1560-1622, Master of the Revels)
and
Sir John Astley (c . 1565-1640,
courtier)
dying before him, following the death
of Sir Edmund Tilney
(c . 1536-1610).
As
Jonson
predeceased Astley, he never took up the position. The document is number 15
of a series of documents sewn into a roll.

Bibliography

Buck was also a poet and historian, publishing a history of London 's colleges and similar educational institutions in 1615, as well as a history of Richard III. That he had become increasingly unfit to discharge his duties in the years leading up to the appointment of Astley in 1622 is suggested by Chamberlain's comment in a letter to Carleton on 30 Mar. 1620 that 'Old Sir George Buck, master of the revels, has gone mad' (quoted in DNB).
He was a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Charles, and tilted in Barriers ; he also performed in Hym. (1606) and Lord Hay 's Masque (1607).
Tilney was appointed Master of the Revels on 24 July 1579, and for almost the next thirty years he was responsible both for overseeing all court entertainments, and approving all stage plays. George Buck (who was probably Tilney's nephew) was granted a reversion in the office on the accession of James in 1603, and he seems to have acted as his uncle's deputy from this point. Tilney himself appears to have retired from his duties by about 1608.
