Quarterage payments (membership dues) by
Jonson
to the Tylers' and Bricklayers'
Company
, 29 June
1596 , in the Quarterage Book for 1588-1616.
This is
Jonson
's first membership payment and shows that he is a freeman of the
company, probably, as Eccles (1988) surmises, after serving an apprenticeship. The
two pence at the beginning of the entry suggests that
Jonson
was paying only half of
the full four-pence quarterly rate (Edmond, 1974, 136).
Jonson
's payment probably
thus covers two years, extending back to 1594. The Quarterage book is a folio-sized
record of quarterage payments by guild members. It is unfoliated and arranged
chronologically.
