Created a db in eXist, and uploaded the document along with the skeleton feature structure doc.
Then I went to start working on the Cocoon setup, and found that there are no group permissions set for the devshire user, so I couldn't get in. Resolved this (with Greg's help) through the sysops.
Created another simple XSLT file (below) to formalize the extraction of all distinct abbreviations used in the text, by creating a feature value library (<fvLib>). This is a valid TEI document that just requires that we complete the explanatory information for each of the abbreviations. I've captured about two thirds of that information already from the RET page, and will get together with Karin to complete the rest and add the information into the document.
The plan is to link this information to the actual abbreviations in the text, not through referencing with ids (which would involve editing the original text, something we are not able to do), but through XPath lookups based on the text of the abbreviations themselves. The effect should be the same, but we avoid the necessity to introduce ids and pointers and keep them in sync.

Worked on comparing the abbreviation symbols used in the text against the RET page here. Results appear in a future post (Feb 5) made after finishing the process. There are some obvious errors (missing parentheses etc.) and some other items that look suspicious. When this is finished, I need to sit down with Karin and figure out Unicode representations for those characters which can be represented. One obvious oddity is that long-s appears to have been ignored throughout; that means we can't display it. That will mean that displaying other period features looks a bit strange, absent the s which everyone will know should be there.

Created the blog, added users, ported over the proposal, worked out a timeline, and created tasks with deadlines for the project.
We should by now have good TEI collation info; the next stage is to render it out to the document.
Focus on the CSS with Karin, and make sure the whole site looks good. Create a logo. Here's a suggestion: use a collage of characters cut out from the MS itself to create the title "The Devonshire Manuscript". This would represent the fact that the MS itself is a collage of contributions, and at the same time would give a period feel to the site.
Before we get too close to the deadline (April 26), we need to have Ray look at what's been done so far and ensure it meets his requirements. Do that, and get any required fixes done before proceeding.
There are two types of metadata that need to be displayed: that for individual poems, and that for the MS as a whole. The latter is simpler, in that it can be a separate view/page linked from the TOC, so do that first. The former may be slightly more difficult, because it has to be incorporated somehow into the existing poem display page.
