In answer to Leanna's query: Rather than saying "1ère édition," the year the dictionary was published (1694) would be preferable. Also, the name and sponsor of the database is important in this case, rather than the section of the database in which the dictionary is found: The ARTFL Project, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, University of Chicago.

Since I can't manage to put the encoded version here, I'm sending it to Leanna.

1) MH and I created "references_sonnet_1621.xml" file in the 1621 folder so that Lauren and I would not accidentally overwrite each others work if we were to edit the "references.xml" document at the same time. MH will take the my references from "references_sonnet_1621.xml" and add them to "references.xml".

I am proofing the Candale right now and my hope is that we can put up the first volume before the end of the week... and then I'll be gone, but the second one hopefully will be done a few days upon my return (so we're looking at September 5 or 6 for posting, depending on what works for M., obviously).

Still working at proofing the Varin as well - it won't be done until I'm back, either, but the Varin is less dire as it is referenced for the most part (though I am adding in some of the authors Varin does not acknowledge!), and it could use a final proof after that as well.

The Isembourg also needs a final look over and references, which I'm thinking I'll tackle in my fall 2009 co-op term (starting September 6th).

I've gradually been working my way through the markup issues in La Comtesse D'Isembourg, and I think it would be a good idea to list some of the obvious ones here so that if they're reproduced in other texts, they'll be easy to fix.

First, CSS issues. In @rend attributes, we use standard CSS code only; the Isembourg text had quite a few errors. Among them:

• font-style: small-caps SHOULD BE font-variant: small-caps
• text-align: top-center SHOULD BE text-align: center. text-align only handles horizontal alignment.
• rend="top-right" is not CSS. Mostly this error occurred in <fw type="pageNum> tags, where the intention was to float a page number to the right or left. This is how to do that: <fw type="pageNum" rend="float: right;">235</fw>. Remember that both right-floated (recto) and left-floated (verso) page numbers should appear IMMEDIATELY AFTER the <pb> tag, and BEFORE the (normally centred) <fw type="head"> tag containing a running title.
• left-indent: 0em SHOULD BE text-indent: 0em;. The text-indent property affects only the first line of a paragraph or other block element; margin-left and padding-left properties affect the entire block.

Other problems were caused by some very odd settings in the <tagsDecl> element in the header (where we specify the basic page layout, on which individual rendering instructions are based); there were negative top and bottom margins for page breaks, which meant that each page rendered partially over the top of the preceding page.

There were also many instances of page number tags which were encoded as @type="sig".

The most significant errors have been fixed, and the display now looks pretty good, but I think someone should take a closer look at the layout and rendering at some point.

Yesterday and today I did the final adjustments to the text. MH taught me how to change text line height in order to better represent what is in the side margin of page 114 of the facsimile:

I think I've finished with the tweaking of the sonnet. Everything looks pretty good. However, I just want to remind MH to fix the figure in line 3456 when you get the chance as the "L'impreinte de la Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal" (p. 105 of the pdf) is running into the text when it should be in the margin.

My next task will be to finish filling in all medical allusions in the references.xml for the 1621 sonnet. Afterward, I plan to go back to the 1609 and transcribe the rest of the "Timethélie" plus the dedications as they were left unfinished.

Lots of work still ahead! :)

Uploaded most recent changes to references and Varin, after validating them; then I also uploaded CC's latest versions of the images files (after one XML tweak). Then uploaded the Isembourg, and found a lot of layout issues which I'm still working on, mainly related to page breaks and running headers. I've fixed some, but I'm still working to figure out exactly what is causing the others.

So yet again, I think I'll be revising my list of tasks. The Comtesse d'Isembourg is now completely proofed and ready to be put up (the only thing we need to finish is to agree on reference material and write the references).

I've gone back to the Varin to finish the references section on it, since m.h. and I realized that it was not in fact complete! In doing so, I have looked at the quote tags and realized Varin uses a lot of quotes but does not attribute them to authors. I talked this through with c.c., and we think that the best way to proceed would be to search the quotations and see if we can tie them to an author; if so, to then put a note tag by the quote in the Varin stating the author's name and (if there is one) the work that the citation came from. Around the author's name, I would put ref tags, so that in the references document this author can have his or her own entry. At the end of this reference to the author, I will simply put that Varin uses a quote from him or her in Les épines du mariage, but that he does not acknowledge this author as being the source.

I'm thinking I will need to spend at least a week just working on tracking the quotes down and writing references for the document.

We (or I) also need to proof the reference document as well, because I don't think that has been done yet.

Finally, with regards to the Greek quotes, unfortunately, I do not read Greek, and I'm almost wondering if I ought to contact a few friends of mine who do (I would take them out for a coffee or buy them dinner or something in return). There's not a ton of Greek, so we might almost consider asking one of my trustworthy sources to kindly volunteer a bit of time proofreading my transcriptions just to make sure they're correct. (Or to have a good laugh at my misinterpretations of words, at any rate.)

Finally (for the second finally), I think I will be leaving the Candale for the next few weeks until this Varin stuff is added. I hope to return to the Candale and do its references (along with those for the Comtesse d'Isembourg) in September upon my return.

1) MH helped me to figure out how to get rid of line breaks occurring in the text where they shouldn't be. This is done by adding

margin-bottom: 0

or

margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0

in the <lg> tag.

2) Discovered that the word "FIN" in line 4008 was not center-aligned. The reason for this was because "text-align: center" was inside the <hi> tag instead of the <p> tag. MH showed me how to fix this with

I've now got the Complaintes text looking more or less as it should, after some extensive XML edits as well as a few tweaks to the CSS and XSLT. In the process, I noticed that the display of reference notes in the marginal popup was not optimal, especially for longer notes, so I worked on that a bit; it now scrolls, has smaller text, and has been moved slightly to the right. Tested that on FF, Midori, Opera and IE8.
