Agremens - parties 5 and 6: formatting notes

I also looked at the Agremens 5 and 6 up on the website today, and I attempted to fix several other formatting issues:

  1. On the title page: "A PARIS" and "AU PALAIS" need to be centered. I ended up centering each line of this paragraph by using a <hi rend="text-align: center; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;> tag. Hopefully this should do the trick.
  2. I also changed the margins to the settings for Agremens parties 1 and 2. In the dedication, words like "AUX FILLES" (like for "MESDEMOISELLES" in partie 1) wouldn't fit on all one line, so hopefully the adaptations to the layoutDesc will take care of this.
  3. In general, the margins are messed up, in particular in both Agremens 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 in the parts preceding the narrative (e.g. the dedication "AUX FILLES", the "EXTRAIT du Privilege du Roy"). It is for this reason that I also changed the font of these paragraphs from 125% to 110%.
  4. The spacing of the portion "AUX FILLES" (partie 5) is a bit confusing ; it's as though the lines are being right-justified, not only left-justified. MH, any thoughts? I'm not sure what's going on or how to fix it.
  5. I also attempted to change the closer, "votre tres-obéissant serviteur", so that each line would indent a bit more, as it is in the .pdf.
  6. Thus far, all of my headers have also been hideously too big! I attempted to change this, so hopefully they will show up more accurately on the website.
  7. QUESTION: Should I start indenting the second line anytime I have a large letter at the start of the paragraph so as to make spacing look more like that of the .pdf? (For example, p.1 of Agreemens 5 and 6).

Working on the Choliere

I've started re-working the Choliere text, which EM prepared as part of her workshop last year, to go up on the site. It's generally pretty good, but there are many fixes needed. This is what I've done so far:

  • Fixed a lot of @rend attributes which were not CSS.
  • Changed <fw type="pageNum"> to @type="folioNum", since these are folio number showing only on the recto.
  • Added lots of header information (still waiting for some from CC).
  • Added the <tagsDecl>/<rendition> elements for describing the basic page layout.
  • Moved all folio number tags before the running title headers, because they float. This is standard on our site; it makes the rendering easier.
  • Enhanced some of the @rend attribute CSS in the front to make the rendering better approximate the original.

The most urgent problem that remains is the issue of the little marginal subject headings; these are exactly like those in the 1609 Sonnet, where we've handled them with <argument> tags, which are rendered into the margin. However, there, each little heading signalled the end of one <lg> and the beginning of another, which is logical (new heading, new topic, new line group). In the Choliere, whole chapters constitute a single paragraph, so there's no division into which you could insert an <argument> tag. I'm still working on this. I think the tag is the right one to use, but the schema is blocking me. In addition, I'm not at all sure that these unbroken blocks of text are rightly described as paragraphs (they're marked with <p>). They really are "anonymous blocks". But changing to <ab> still doesn't allow me to insert the <argument> tag.

Finally, chapter headings are marked as <p> tags containing <title> elements. I think we really should be using <head> elements there.

Working through the first of the modern articles, I'm finding some particular issues to record:

  • We need to link from citations in the text to biblio refs in the document itself, in the <back>. I've settled on doing this with <bibl corresp="#dejean_2005"> (pointing at the xml:id of the <bibl> tag with the full reference).
  • We need to link out to references in the central bibliography file. For that, I've settled on <bibl corresp="../biblio/biblio.xml#mercier_2005">, where the path is relative within the db structure and the corresponding directory structure on my system, and in any case the type of link can be recognized through the presence of biblio.xml. These references will need to be pulled into the article when it's being rendered.
  • We need to link to documents in the anthology itself. These are not really citations; they're references and intended as links. For this, I've gone for <ref target="xhtml.xq?id=operateur_cephalique">; which should work in context (all documents are accessed through URLs in the root of the site), and which can also be expanded to a full URL if necessary.
  • Footnotes often include references, which will lead to the same kind of embedding problem we have with references referencing other references. I think a site-wide solution might be achieved for this in JavaScript, whereby the popup element is cloned so two items can be displayed at the same time.
  • I've used <cit rend="block">, which will need some specific handling. Once this is done, it might be repurposed to handle those references which include multi-paragraph quotes.

Agremens - parties 1 and 2: formatting notes

I just took a look at the Agremens online, and I noticed a few formatting issues. Most of these I have tried to correct on my own, but here is my to-do list:

  1. Right at beginning: "Philogame et Antigame" needs to be on one line. I attempted to fix this by changing the rend values (now I have the whole thing set at 17em;, the left margin being 2.5em and the right being 2em; text-indent I measured to be roughly 1.25em.
  2. In the same vein, "A PARIS" is not all fitting on one line, nor is any of the paragraph coming after it. I will have to watch for this once the updated version is up on the server to see if my changes have corrected these issues.
  3. QUESTION: I use many figDescs in order to describe the detailing around the first letter of a paragraph, etc. So far, when I am citing the text (eg. "Fleurs autour de la dédicace « Aux Dames ») I am simply copy-pasting guillemets from CharMap. However, I'm thinking there is a better way to do this. MH, would I use a mentioned tag?
  4. The J.D.D.C. in the closer should be indented 7 or 8 em; I've been using a text-indent tag but it doesn't seem to be working.
  5. MH, on p. 133 there is a giant space after the oversized "S" at the start of the paragraph... any idea why? I'm at a loss.
  6. p. 107 onwards: all the page numbers were appearing in the right margin instead of alternating and the header for each page was "Chagrins du Mariage", so I did a quick copy-paste on every even number/its heading and this should have corrected the problem.
  7. Finally, I also put in hi rend=s on the title page for the "Seconde Partie".

Indexing problem with ref links & xml id editing

1) For some reason, many of the reference links on the online version of the sonnet 1621 weren't functioning properly. When I clicked on several of the links, a pop-up box with the definition did not appear. This was occurring for references found in both the references.xml and the references_sonnet_1621.xml. For instance, only the following references in the references_sonnet_1621.xml popped up with a definition when you clicked on them: indien, laurier, napelle and aconit. Fortunately, after much investigation, MH figured out that it was an indexing problem and fixed it.

2) Fixed the xml ids related to the Ithys myth in the references.xml file because some of the ids didn't have the modern spelling of the characters' names.

3) Re-linked several xml ids relating to the Ithys myth from pages 15 to 16 of the 1621 sonnet because they had the wrong id.

Marked up the biblio of Corps des époux

I'm marking up the first of the modern articles, with the idea that when it's done, I'll document the markup practices I've used, and then subsequent articles can be marked up by the team. I've now done the bibliography, but there are some outstanding questions about formatting differences between this biblio and the main site bibliography; for instance, in the main biblio, authors' forenames are shown in parentheses after the surname, whereas in the article they weren't. Also, the main biblio seems to use "dir." for editors, where the article biblio uses "éd." (unless I'm misunderstanding -- could these be different roles?). For now, I've standardized this biblio to match the main one.

Search functionality moving forward

Continuing work on the search system, to get it to a more usable state:

  • doc_with_refs.xq now incorporates match-tagging using the old fulltext index system. This works to apply <exist:match> tags for any-word or all-word searches.
  • <exist:match> tags in documents are now rendered highlighted in light grey, with yellow text (in the default theme).
  • In the case of exact-phrase matches, we have a different problem, because using the shorthand eXist &= or |= matches won't work. At the moment, I'm just highlighting all the words in the phrase. In the long run, we need to use the ft:query syntax to take advantage of the new Lucene features, but that doesn't seem to work at all in the Cocoon block build; that's something I'm still trying to figure out. It could be a problem with our eXist setup (although it seems to comply perfectly with the instructions), or with the Cocoon build process.

Updated XQuery to change deprecated function name

The deprecated function name request:request-parameter had survived in the project XQuery from years ago. This is deprecated, and will be removed from eXist 1.5/1.6, so I've changed all the instances to the current request:get-parameter, and tested. All OK.

Intro before quoted refs and note tags

Today, I finished adding introductory sentences to all the quoted references in references_sonnet_1621.xml. In the process of doing this, I made sure to check that all the references in the references_sonnet_1621.xml file were tagged in the sonnet_1621.xml file each time they appeared. I found that I had forgotten to tag a lot of words that belonged under "humeur" but I've fixed this now.

I also had to add several note tags in the sonnet_1621.xml file to indicate spelling errors by the scribe. I think there are more of these errors, which are indicated in comment tags, but I'll need to comb through the text to make sure that I include a note for each of them.
