<cit type="block"> is used for a blockquote, and normally translates into an XHTML <blockquote> tag in the output, quite reasonably. However, that gets it a default margin, which occasionally is not what is required, especially in the source texts, so I've now added a handler enabling the @rend attribute to be used to override it with (e.g.) margin: 0 on <cit>.

1) Need MH to look at why all "ẽ" letters appear in bold in both the Forest nuptiale and in the Sonnet 1609 even though I didn't encode them as such. Strangely, all other letters with a tilde appear normally when viewing the texts online.

2) Also need to get MH to take a look at line 752 of the XML in the Sonnet 1609. For some reason, in the web version, the dotted page break line is pushed off further to the right.

Fixed a couple of issues in the Nuptial mentioned by LSPW in the previous post -- it turns out that the layoutDesc had specified a default setting for text-indent in paragraphs, and although it was correctly being overridden, it turns out that the layoutDesc setting was being inserted into a @style attribute rather than being a class, which and it was being added AFTER the local style information. It strikes me that the layoutDesc data should actually be done with a CSS class, in an inline stylesheet, so that it would always be overridden by the local CSS; I'll have to do that, but for the moment I've just reversed the insertion sequence so that the local style comes later, and therefore overrides the preceding one from layoutDesc.

The bug with the Daumas reference was a problematic one, and puzzling too. The issue was this:

I never anticipated that the footnotes in documents would be calling out to references which are in the central bibliography; the biblio was originally set up for the editorial articles. However, a <note> element in the Sonnet now refers to an item in the biblio. The XQuery is correctly retrieving the biblio item and adding it in a one-item bibliography in a div in the back element (all correct, and what we want); but the XSLT was failing to convert this to output. It was just coming out as plain text, when it should have come out as a bibliographic list containing a single item with an appropriate @xml:id and styling.

I've taken the code which was handling bibliographical items in the editorial articles (in article_p5_to_xhtml.xsl) and adapted it for use in text_p5_to_xhtml.xsl. It took a while to get this working, but now it does -- I was fooled by the @mode="textDoc" setting, which had to be added to the initial template to start the processing of back/div[@type="bibliography" or @type='biblioCentral']. Seems to be working OK now.

For some reason, the argument above does not render as text-align: left in the web version even though I've encoded the text as so. However, when you look at all the other arguments online like the one below, the text is left-aligned.

Another problem I encountered with the arguments in the FN, is that even though I encoded the paragraph following the argument as text-indent: 0, a text indent still appears on the web version.

At LSPW's request, added a handler for the <gloss> tag, and for <quote> tags not parented by< cit>s. Updated all files in the db, and discussed some of many markup issues with La Forest nuptiale.

Today, my work consisted of doing line by line proofreading of the text and XML markup of the Forest Nuptiale (starting from page 14 of the pdf) as well as searching for terms that required references to be written. So far, I haven't found any new terms that need references but below is a list of some of the work I did on the XML markup:

1) added missing <head> tags
2) replaced <hi rend="font-style: italic;"> with <title level="m"> where applicable
3) added missing drop-caps
4) modified font style, font size; font variant and letter spacing
5) added missing <sig> tags
6) Checked that existing reference links were functioning online
7) added linguistic notes where applicable

There seems to be a lot of work to be done in terms of the above tasks on markup. I doubt I will be able to get through the entire text by the end of the month but I will do my best.

I have switched computers yet again (the first time was because the power died on Radicchio), this time it's due to Java and Oxygen not wanting to cooperate on Mac. Fortunately (but sadly), now that LCC is no longer using Arugula, I can work on it. I haven't had any problems so far.

Yesterday, I finished the transcription of the Sonnet 1609. All the references have been completed for this text too. The only task that remains is to proofread the last 20 pages of transcribed text and encoding, however, I'll have to first wait until MH returns so that he can upload my changes to the sonnet_1609.xml file online. In the meantime, I have been working on the tasks for the "Forest nuptiale" that are listed in LCC's 21/07/10 blog posting:

1) Both items 1 and 2 on LCC's list are not really issues because the <text rendition="layoutDesc"> is found in <text type="book" xml:lang="fr-1694acad" rendition="layoutDesc">. The only question I have to ask MH is whether or not it is necessary to include <text type="book" xml:lang="fr-1694acad". Emurphy had also already encoded all the front matter, thus a title page already exists. So instead, I have been working on reformatting the text of the front matter as there are some elements that need to be fixed so that it appears correctly online.

2) As for the marginal notes, I'm not sure why they aren't showing up online but a possible solution is to use <argument> and <ab> tags as this seemed to work from the Satyre Menippée. I'll have to check with MH before I go ahead and make these changes.

3) Finally, LCC has gone over with me the tasks of writing the remainder of the references for the FN and proofreading the transcribed text, which I will be working on in the weeks to come.

As I rapidly approach the end of my work on the anthology, I'm realizing there is a lot still needing to be done encoding-wise in the Forest nuptiale that I will not have a chance to complete. I will attempt to make a list of the tasks below in hopes that mholmes and ccarlin will take them up once I've left, because this text has the potential to be a phenomenal addition to the anthology.

1. There is currently no <text rendition="layoutDesc"> following the TEI header, which means that there is no front matter, no <titlePage>, no <docImprint>, no <docDate>, no <imprimatur>, etc., which means that in the XHTML, there is no title page (obviously).
2. On that subject, there is also a <text type="book" xml:lang="fr-1694acad" rendition="layoutDesc"> directly following the TEI header, and I'm not sure what purpose it serves or if we want to keep it.
3. The marginal notes are absolutely instrumental to this text, and at the moment, they are not showing up. emurphy has used a <note target="#anchor(number) targetEnd="#anchor(number"> to do this.
4. In addition, the issue of the columns in the lists following the "Avant Propos" needs to be attended to (I have already blogged on this -- it's the "Lists in columns in the Forest nuptiale", also assigned to mholmes.
5. Finally, I will not have had the time to write all of the references, so hopefully ccarlin will be able to fill in the ones I have not managed to complete during my hours.

In working on the Forest nuptiale, I've noticed an interesting issue that we may need to spend some serious time working through:

After the "Avant-propos" and a sonnet dedicated to the reader from the author, we come to a "Catalogue des autheurs desquels on a tiré ce discours" page that lists all the authors that inspired this work. The first one, "Agathie" has a drop-cap "A". The list is in two columns.

In her encoding of the list, emurphy used a <list type="simple">; each name was made an <item>. She also attempted to make a column break by using a <cb/>.

emurphy has used this same format for the "Tables des chapitres" that occurs on the page following the "Catalogue des autheurs". In the "Tables des chapitres", there are also two columns, and the first item in the left column, "Romains", has a drop-cap.
