For a variety of reasons, I'm going to switch from using nslcd to sssd. I've started the process, but it'll take some time.
I'm also thinking of giving Cobbler (Ubuntu help), and Ansible a try.
We've had a problem updating from the mirrored partner repo for quite a while, so I finally took the time to figure it out.
It *looks* like the problem is in the apt-mirror app itself. As described here apt-mirror wants to create an InRelease file. Not sure why it wants to create one locally when there isn't one upstream, but there you go.
As the post describes, our repo contained an InRelease file that was not on the Canonical site, and our local machines were using it instead of the updated Release file. Oddly, all other repos contain the InRelease file - I have no idea why this one doesn't, or why it suddenly created one.
So, perhaps this is less of a solution than a band-aid.
Anyway, the post recommends deleting the InRelease file from the $repo/dists/$dist-name directory and commenting out the two lines in the /usr/bin/apt-mirror script that look like this:
add_url_to_download( $url . "InRelease" );
Run the apt-mirror update and the file should not be re-created. Re-run apt-get update on your local machine and you shouldn't have the hashsum mismatch.
Trying to get a USB 3 device to mount in the Windows VM. Required:
1) connect USB drive and when Mac OS mounts it, eject it
2) update to newer version of VirtualBox software
3) when you start VM app you'll be asked to download and update extensions, do that
4) when you start windows in VM, in the device menu choose install, get the CD as a device, open it and run the windows.exe file)
5) shut down the Windows in the VM
6) in VM app click on Settings button, go to Ports tab, go to USB tab, make sure USB3 is enabled, ideally click on add device button and add device to USB device filters list.
7)
8) restart windows, if USB device doesn't appear in list of devices in FileBrowser,
- check that Mac OS hasn't grabbed the USB device, if it has eject it in the Mac OS
- choose Devices/USB and pick the USB device
Met with Helga today and we discussed the design and implementation of the Victoria Holocaust archive site.
The site will consist of likely no more than a couple of dozen accounts, in sound, text and video format. We (HCMC) will design the site and add the content. They (Helga's and her two associates: Andrea and Jason) will provide us with the material they have collected.
It is still early days, but the site will likely be hand made without much automation beyond JavaScript to search the available records based on type, location and name.
Once they provide me with some sample entries I will design a mock-up.
The goal
Auto magically do the following:
Bind to UVic's ldap server at ldap1p.uvic.ca with the following search base suffix:
- ou=People,dc=uvic,dc=ca
Configure Search and Mapping setting with the following customization from a modified RFC2307 template:
- Users > NFSHomeDirectory > #/Users/Netlink/$uid$
- Users > UserShell > #/bin/bash
So the script found here and then modified by removing the plist for installs older OS X 10.7 partially works. It binds to ldap1p.uvic.ca but does not configure the search and mappings listed above. The Record Types and Attributes remain blank.
Moving forward we believe that dscl likely holds the key for completing the script and adding the necessary customization to the .plist.
This post will be updated as I move forward.
Not a casual job...
Install notes
rvm install jruby-1.7.16 --2.0 doesn't work. RVM looks in a config file to see about 'know-strings', and jruby-1.7.16 isn't one of them. It apears that jruby-1.7.22 is the only one it finds. So, change that.
Also, the $JAVA_HOME it sets isn't right. Set it in .bashrc, like this:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64
PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64
then, do 'source ~/.bashrc' to let your tty know about the change
Also, javac is not installed when RVM does the java install. I installed java-default to compensate, but it adds ~200MB to your install base - there's probably a more economical method of installing javac.
Setting up postgresql: instructions say 'psql -d template1 -U postgres'. But that won't work. Do this instead: 'sudo -u postgres psql -d template1'
Configuring Panoptes: seems to have changed slightly, or docs are bad. Filenames now use a .hudson extension and include test and development settings.
The db:migrate command I change from rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=development to rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=test because the .hudson config files ref'd development and test - with test having the localhost ref from docs
Running the db migrate command fails like this: no such file to load -- bundler/setup
It's because bundler isn't installed, so: gem install bundler
Run rake again: git://github.com/edpaget/cequel.git (at update-cql-version) is not yet checked out. Run `bundle install` first.
Ran bundle install
Then got this:
======================
Errno::ENOENT: No such file or directory - /home/hcmc/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.7.22/gems/jruby-kafka-1.0.0.beta-java/deps.lst
An error occurred while installing jruby-kafka (1.0.0.beta), and Bundler cannot
continue. Make sure that `gem install jruby-kafka -v '1.0.0.beta'` succeeds before bundling.
======================
So, did this:
then ran rake db:migrate... again. Kept getting same error. Online suggestion=move on and see if the problem matters. I did that and MAYBE it worked.
Got further errors suggesting that I needed more gems, so I did what it said.
Stuck here
Sometimes, you need to change tty in the VM. You can get to tty1 by holding down in the RIGHT control key and pressing F1, and tty7 (where X is probably running) with right-ctrl + F7
You can also send arbitrary key codes with VBoxManage:
VBoxManage controlvm Vivid keyboardputscancode 1d 38 (ctrl + alt combo)
You can look up other codes here <http://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/kbd/scancodes-1.html#ss1.4>, but the basic list is:
01 (Esc)
02 (1!), 03 (2@), 04 (3#), 05 (4$), 06 (5%E), 07 (6^), 08 (7&), 09 (8*), 0a (9(), 0b (0)), 0c (-_), 0d (=+), 0e (Backspace)
0f (Tab), 10 (Q), 11 (W), 12 (E), 13 (R), 14 (T), 15 (Y), 16 (U), 17 (I), 18 (O), 19 (P), 1a ([{), 1b (]})
1c (Enter)
1d (LCtrl)
1e (A), 1f (S), 20 (D), 21 (F), 22 (G), 23 (H), 24 (J), 25 (K), 26 (L), 27 (;:), 28 ('")
29 (`~)
2a (LShift)
2b (\|), on a 102-key keyboard
2c (Z), 2d (X), 2e (C), 2f (V), 30 (B), 31 (N), 32 (M), 33 (,<), 34 (.>), 35 (/?), 36 (RShift)
37 (Keypad-*) or (*/PrtScn) on a 83/84-key keyboard
38 (LAlt), 39 (Space bar),
3a (CapsLock)
3b (F1), 3c (F2), 3d (F3), 3e (F4), 3f (F5), 40 (F6), 41 (F7), 42 (F8), 43 (F9), 44 (F10)
45 (NumLock)
46 (ScrollLock)
47 (Keypad-7/Home), 48 (Keypad-8/Up), 49 (Keypad-9/PgUp)
4a (Keypad--)
4b (Keypad-4/Left), 4c (Keypad-5), 4d (Keypad-6/Right), 4e (Keypad-+)
4f (Keypad-1/End), 50 (Keypad-2/Down), 51 (Keypad-3/PgDn)
52 (Keypad-0/Ins), 53 (Keypad-./Del)
54 (Alt-SysRq) on a 84+ key keyboard
55 is less common; occurs e.g. as F11 on a Cherry G80-0777 keyboard, as F12 on a Telerate keyboard, as PF1 on a Focus 9000 keyboard, and as FN on an IBM ThinkPad.
56 mostly on non-US keyboards. It is often an unlabelled key to the left or to the right of the left Alt key.
57 (F11), 58 (F12) both on a 101+ key keyboard
59-5a-...-7f are less common. Assignment is essentially random. Scancodes 55-59 occur as F11-F15 on the Cherry G80-0777 keyboard. Scancodes 59-5c occur on the RC930 keyboard. X calls 5d `KEY_Begin'. Scancodes 61-64 occur on a Telerate keyboard. Scancodes 55, 6d, 6f, 73, 74, 77, 78, 79, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7e occur on the Focus 9000 keyboard. Scancodes 65, 67, 69, 6b occur on a Compaq Armada keyboard. Scancodes 66-68, 73 occur on the Cherry G81-3000 keyboard. Scancodes 70, 73, 79, 7b, 7d occur on a Japanese 86/106 keyboard.
So, I've deployed a replacement for papaya. In the process I've discovered that Google Earth no longer has auto-updates available. This means that if you want to install Google Earth 7 or later, you need to download and install the full package.
I've written an install script in to the hcmc-config app in the build, so it isn't hard to install when needed.
JT had trouble with freezing on a machine yesterday, and doing updates seemed to fix it, so I booted them all up and did all the updates.
I cannot for the life of me find a way to get Jenkins to check out anything from revision.hcmc.uvic.ca (which is only available through https/apache). No configuration of credential settings, ssh keys, user names, passwords or anything else will work. I'm floored, and this stops our build server from being practical.
If we can't get this working, and we can't enable revision.hcmc.uvic.ca svn repos to be anonymous-readable (ticket in with sysadmin right now), then we'll have to take the projects we want to build to SF, Github, or somewhere else we know will work.
