JSR requested this on Friday. Now done, with three back-end tables populated (ethnicities, institution types and locations), and with the colour and heading changed to clearly distinguish it from the original db to prevent confusion. I have his permission to delete the landscapes_backup and landscapes_copy versions of the Powell St db, which I'll do when I get the chance.
Made a lot of progress with drawing this weekend. I've got the drawing functions working on the pilot project, for Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPoint, MultiLineString and MultiPolygon (although not MultiGeometry yet -- that's gnarly). This process has caused me to make some decisions about projections that should probably be documented:
- The default projection for Open Street Maps is EPSG:3857, so I think that should be our default for the tiles we build, and for the drawing tool project base map.
- The default CRS for GeoJSON is EPSG:4326 (WGS 84), so I think that should be the CRS we use in our GeoJSON files, and in the TEI encoding.
- That means that when GeoJSON is loaded into the map, without a CRS being specified at all in the file, it's assumed to be EPSG:4326 by OpenLayers and silently converted to EPSG:3857 before display.
- When I save out or render out GeoJSON from the map, I'm currently doing a behind-the-scenes transform to EPSG:4326.
- I believe this is the sanest way to make things simple for the largest number of people: what you would do without knowing or caring about projections should just work.
- However, for the sophisticated user, there does need to be a way to specify these things, and where (for instance) your base map is not EPSG:3857 and/or your preferred GeoJSON format is not EPSG:4326, you can use what you want and still get perfectly good results; that should probably be achieved by our actively reading the projection of the basemap when our vector layer is created, and having a setting for the user to specify the CRS for their GeoJSON, overriding our default.
Received another note from CP today re changes.
Have made all the changes as requested (photo caption wording change; choice of links
for buttons updated); published pages.
Sent email to CP advising changes made.
Leaving early.
Replaced the content in the About page with new stuff from AB.
Author's proofing corrections done.
Finished the grant app with JJ; we will post it to one of the SIGs over the weekend.
Got well into writing the basic drawing interface, so that ST will be able to edit her features. I have some wrinkles with multi-geometries, although MultiPoint and MultiLineString appear to be working, the former with a hack for what appears to be an OL bug. MultiPolygon also seems to be afflicted with a bug. I also have to get coords converting from metres to lonlat.
Revised recent update.
Edited CP's faculty page with new content.
Sent email to CP (cc'd RLK, AL, SA) with changes.
Finally got a chance to start on the drawing features for the map. Spent a lot of time getting help from PS on creating flex-based menus, now working nicely; and I have drawing of features working, although I'm doing nothing with the results. Next stage, fairly urgent, is to get GeoJSON output from the geometry-drawing so that ST can edit her features more easily.
Today received 7 of 8 printer toner cartridges. l black on back order.
