Worked on the schema to get rid of default attributes and tighten up some other stuff. Built the XHTML output into the xpr file along with a couple of other things. Tweaked the XHTML documentation output (more to do here). Met with the team and discussed more needs -- todo for me:

• Add a bibliography to the schema.
• Add authorshipSymbol (e.g. Greek theta, or musical sharp symbol)
• Add <pb> and <cb> tags to some sample poems, and document in schema.
• Add some values (for now proleptic and analeptic) for figure/@type.
• Add Marc relators taxonomy (stripped down) and example respStmts to files and documentation.

Met with SA and AC, and we planned out the next phase, which involves getting page-images available on the Wordpress site. These are the steps (task assigned to me because my work has to be done before SA can get to work):

• Rewrite the rules for file- and folder-naming, and train AC's nominated RA to make sure all new images conform to them.
• Fix and normalize existing file- and folder-naming on vicpoet account on home1t:
  • Move all images into a www/page-images/full subfolder.
  • Lowercase everything
  • Remove trailing " 0001" before ".jpg" (it's pointless)
  • Change dashes and spaces to underscores
  • Fix idiosyncracies in individual folder trees
• Port the same fixes to image file paths in page-images and illustrations fields.
• Copy image links from illustrations field over to page-images (there are only 12).
• Run link checker and assign RA to fix broken links.
• Write an ImageMagick script which checks for thumbnails, and where they don't exist, creates them in a parallel folder structure (www/page-images/thumb).
• Run the script on the server, niced appropriately, to create the initial set of thumbnails.
• Set it to run periodically (chron job?)
• (SA) Update the WordPress plugin so that when retrieving a poem it also retrieves image links, and displays them as thumbnails, linked to full-size images.

We also discussed research components for the future grant application: automated rhyme-scheme detection, automated meter detection, and genre detection.

Looking at the Graves Diary project to plan the next phase and a cooperative venture with Trinity Dublin, noticed a couple of bugs:

• Access to log entries is broken due to an ambiguous rule match in XSLT. That's one for me to fix.
• Searching with accented characters is broken. This is not our problem; it's caused by the Apache connector, because when searching through the Pear URI everything works fine. Similarly, everything works OK in Scancan, so presumably the virtual hosts for these two projects are set up differently, and the fix should be obvious.

EDIT: This is no longer necessary, as JW has moved the records manually (there were only four).

Did a relatively simple change requested by JW, but there's one more request that's a bit tricky because it involves migrating a field from one table to another, and there are many linked records in other tables:

Move the first option in the ‘Manifesto content’ tab, called “Discourse of king unaware, evil councillors” to the ‘Approach’ tab 

This shouldn't be rushed, and I don't have time for it right now.

Met with PAB and looked at work that needs to be done on the site. She has more articles and audio to find and process, but meanwhile there are a number of things I can be doing:

• Add the photo to ragnheidur_nordholm_01.php. The picture is in media/photos.
• Add the photo to batey_stewart_01.php, from the same location.
• Add the photo to juliusdottir_01.php, from the same location.
• Mark up and post the two Driscoll articles in media/article, including a picture for each.
• Mark up and post the new Sturla material in INCOMING (an article, an audio interview, and a paper interview).

Bug report: if I run a search like this:
"Tower of Winds" two things happen.
1) the search box does not reflect my search terms (it should)
2) it doesn't search for the complete phrase (it should)

If I do this:
+tower+of+winds the search box DOES reflect my search (that is, it prints +tower+of+winds back in to the search field), but it does NOT find all words.

It also seems to be case-sensitive now. Grr.

I need to look at the SQL being generated, obviously.

Streets:
- the labels for the streets are not appearing whether I include them in the labels group or put them in their own street-labels group
- if I click on a street I don't get its info, unless I click on a very precise location (?centre pixel of street polygon or label), but if I select a rectangle, I get info on all the streets contained.

Meeting with L.A., resulting in the following task to be done tomorrow:

Make these changes to the Hispanital site:

1. Create a new page for Course Materials.
2. Link that page from a new top-level menu item at the bottom of the current menu.
3. Put one link on the page, to the items below.
4. Grab all content from span250.zip (in the root of the site on your HD), and put it in a subfolder span250.
5. Tidy up the index page so that Show/Hide works intuitively for the individual items (click to show, click again to hide).

See emails in July, culminating in one with data about the calendar on July 4. Get the RSS feed URL, and use PHP to transform it into something useful on the site page. HCMC might do something similar for lab schedules.

This must be done before I leave. We need to get the basic site design done, based on pictures which Dr. Z has provided from the BC Archives.

Did some updates to the GRS site on Dr. Bowman's instructions. Noticed in the process that the sitemap page needs updating; it could actually be auto-generated from the menu, perhaps on another unlinked page, then copy-pasted into the page (auto-generation on the page itself is probably a bad idea because users who are avoiding JavaScript will use the sitemap). Adding this as a task, so it gets done.

No more comments have arrived as of September 2007, so I'm marking this Completed.

John Tucker has been soliciting comments from students of OE and Icelandic to help new students get to grips with the courses, or decide whether they want to take them or not. The only accessible location for this info is on the current Old English site, which is truly ancient. I've created a page for the comments, and added the first lot of comments, as well as re-christening the site from "Old English 340" to the more general "Old English (and Icelandic)".

What remains to be done is:

• Add appropriate styles to the stylesheet to make the student comments look better.
• Rewrite the site as XHTML 1.1 (where possible), including rebuilding HotPot exercises. We can now use macrons etc.
• Rewrite the CSS to make the site look more modern.

Discuss revamping of philosophy and English sites over summer with Peter. Done April 11.

One of our older sites, the Latin Driller Killer, is looking a bit messed-up -- I'm not sure why, but a lot of the CSS and content is styled wrongly or not styled at all.

The related site, Wheelock, is fine (I've just done some more regular updates), but the Drill site is a mess. It's used by Latin 101, 102, 201 and (occasionally) 202 students, and GRS would like it fixed.

Completed Feb 6: DB is now available so we can test the client with it. Do a quick review (half-an-hour of experimentation, and half-an-hour of writing impressions).

This is essentially the same as the task described here, except that the XQuery ports have already been done. Katakana is no longer really relevant, but it's a great testbed for complicated XQueries that really stress the server, and for range indexes, and it's a fine example project, so we should keep it live.

Completed 16/01/07: Following a discussion with Peter: There are now several proposed journal projects, including ScanCan and the IALLT journal, which are likely to adopt an online publication system. We need to design such a system, based on ScanCan and the ACH Abstracts, in a generic form which can be customized easily for specific projects.

Draw up a plan for this project, with enough detail and diagramming to clarify how it will be done to an outsider (such as Barbara Sawhill from IALLT).

As of end of December, only this task remained:

• Replace current faculty details page with 1) page listing faculty categorized (regulary faculty, adjunct faculty, continuing sessional, other sessional) and showing for each person whether they are entitled to supervise grad students; 2) page for each individual faculty member.

• Add list of Departmental Advisors to Contact Us page, or as separate listing in the department section.
• Make link to "Studies in Philosophy Booklet" more prominent in the courses sections

The Dean may want to update the Humanities site. Preparing the proposal entails:
- familiarize myself with current site
- familiarize myself with DW/Contribute model
- familiarize myself with UVic templates
- get specifics from Dean at meeting on Monday Dec 4
Task will be completed when either proposal is done or I've decided that needed work is so minor that a proposal is not warranted.
