Pausanius 1.8.4 - Calades - January 23

Posted by amorena on 23 Jan 2017 in Activity log

1.8.4 : Although there is some discrepancy about the validity of the existence of Calades, I have found other scholarship which gives Pausanius the benefit of the doubt:

Please refer to the footnotes:
https://books.google.ca/books?id=2EDOOUio040C&pg=PA162&lpg=PA162&dq=Calades+who+was+athens&source=bl&ots=xbkXNkPlDH&sig=3GTDbChmrv0yMtn-bZZeTQh8wN8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZhauA6tjRAhVH4WMKHTY-AxcQ6AEIKTAE#v=onepage&q=Calades%20who%20was%20athens&f=false

This is also helpful in support of Pausanius' claim:(this bbok can also be found in uvic library database)
https://books.google.ca/books?id=sDcbAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA217&lpg=PA217&dq=Calades+who+was+athens&source=bl&ots=nu1NHLw6A1&sig=V4N_0-hIZFaRLOmC3OlH4qm3418&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZhauA6tjRAhVH4WMKHTY-AxcQ6AEIHzAB#v=onepage&q=Calades%20who%20was%20athens&f=false

I have created the description of Calades with the greek word Καλλιύδης, who Henry has deduced is the man Pausanius is referring to. Please refer to 2nd citation.
