Meeting on progress and next steps

Posted by gregster on 17 Jun 2010 in Activity log

Met with LB. These are the notes, more or less:

We discussed the genealogy thing and came to the conclusion that users
will create their own family map by adding places via lists of events
that get generated by existing methods. However, some additional
functionality that will help them create this family map was discussed.
Here's a picture of our drawing to remind us.

It will work like this:

A user click on a place and get my Characters, Groups, Events, Citations
list. They then click on Characters and get a sub-list which contains
character names (like Apollo). Clicking on Apollo, users get another
sub-list consisting of static categories: Family, Events, Places,
Groups, Citations.

Click on Family > an off map details box is displayed which contains a
static list: Father (which retrieves mortal and godly fathers), Mother
(which retrieves mortal and godly mothers), Children (which retrieves
children of, say, Apollo), Siblings (which retrieves Apollo's siblings).
As this is a static list any query can return an empty result, but if
there are results, users will get a Family list (Dad, Mom, kids, sibs)
for the new character - they can then start again, or click on Events or
Places to start adding locations to the map.

Click on Events > an off map details box (we already have this working
for events associated with the place) is created with all events
associated with the character being displayed in the off-map-details
box. Clicking on an event will add its location to the map.

Click on Places > similar to above. Creates a list of places associated
with this character. Clicking a place will add it to the map.

Click on Groups > creates a list of groups associated with this
character. Clicking a list item will display people in the group/events
associated with the group/places associated with the group.

Click on Citations > create a list of citations which mention this
character. Clicking the citation takes you to the citation itself.

Any time a list is created we need to ensure that a citation is
available (somehow) for the claim we're making regarding the
relationship we are displaying.

Discussed the animated journey map. LB will cause a
real journey (and maybe an uber-journey) to be provided, which will
contain a list of events in the database that have an associated
place, in the sequence they occurred.

Regarding the data itself, we discussed the explosion of events that
occurred in the cave of Cyllene. Once I have a list of all events
that *DID* take place in the cave of Cyllene I'll do the cleanup.
I'm now waiting for K or C to get me the list of events.

All places in the database need to have citations (like Apollodorus
1.1.1), and we're missing some. The following is a more-or-less complete
list of the places needing citations:
Among the Gerenians
Aphidnae
Arges
Asteria

Ephrya
Europe
Greece
Heaven
Land of the Dryopes
Naupactus
Nowhere
Pallene

Smithy of Hephaestus

We also have a number of places lacking co-ordinates (87 to be precise).
We need to make it a priority to fill in as many blanks as possible, as
quickly as possible, Any places that will never get co-ordinates
(like Heaven, Nowhere etc.) need to have something specific
(and consistent) in the notes field. For example "NO_COORDS". That way,
I can check for the note and handle it in a different way than I would
with a regular place. Here's the list:
Adrastia
Aeaean Ilse
Aegialia
Aegialus
Aeolia
Among the Gerenians
Amphilochian Argos
Arges
Asopus
