To answer your question regarding the in-8: in, followed by a number indicates the physical finished size of a printed book (examples of common sizes: in-8, in-16, etc). Most of the petits romans fall into the in-8 category.
The numbering system stems from the way in which large pieces of paper used for printing the pages of a book were folded in order to make the finished book.
If you were as old as I am, you would know of the somewhat onerous task of slitting the pages of a book before you could read it. This was usually done with a letter opener or knife. Books in French used to come with the pages uncut. Actually, I miss the process:)
