Dictionary.com has two definitions for Bridgeman “a person who works on a bridge or on the construction of bridges,” OR “a person who manages the loading and unloading of ferries at a landing dock.” Which definition should be applied to men who simply put “bridgeman” on their attestation papers?

I've been having difficulty finding a period definition of “axman/axeman” that isn't “man who uses axe” or a serial killer in New Orleans in the early 1900s. Have filed it under lumberman for the time being as modern definitions involve the chopping down of trees.
