Received answers from PD to the questions I posed last week (see http://hcmc.uvic.ca/blogs/index.php?blog=22&p=7901&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ). To summarize:
Employment types: these should (and will) be maintained as three separate fields, rather than being combined into one text field. This will result in some changes to the underlying search code, but the normalization gained will be worth it. I haven't decided yet whether I'll change the 1901 and 1891 data to match (the employment field doesn't appear in 1881).
Location: in short, it's a confusing table, but all of the nomenclature matches up to the records. See these pages for explanation:
- 1881: http://vihistory.ca/content/census/1881/census1881.php?page=subdistricts
- 1891: http://vihistory.ca/content/census/1891/census1891.php?page=subdistricts
PD will get back to me on exactly how to structure the 1911 census tracts in the locations table, once he figures out how it should all fit together.
