Ajax in Apollo Epitome

Posted by louise on 25 Nov 2011 in Activity log
There are two XML IDs for the character Ajax in characters.xml. ajax_1 is just a persName and ajax_2 is a persName with age = 7. So far in the Epitome, it appears that all the Ajax entries link to ajax_xx, so it needs to be determined which Ajax ID in characters.xml they should be linked to. Is one the Ajax who goes crazy, kills that cattle, and dies (1.5.6) and the other the Ajax who is mentioned after that? I discovered the issue at 1.6.6 where there is an instance of Ajax that isn't linked. ----- The first Ajax, ajax_1 (Ajax the lesser, the Locrian) and ajax_2 (Telamonian Ajax) are sometimes very clear which one is which, but sometimes aren't. I went through each entry in Epitome and made the appropriate changes, but feel free to revise them. It seems to me that Telamonian Ajax (#2) was the one who went wild and killed sheep (or cattle) after he lost Achilles' armor to Odysseus at the funeral games. This was apparently covered in Sophocles' play entitled Ajax, and Apollodorus is referring to it here. Locrian Ajax is mostly referred to by Apollodorus in dealing with the capture of Cassandra within the temple. -Matt
