Vesalius

Per request from EF, I've changed some of the page names, added a renseignements page with placeholder text, added some 'button' css to the front page reveal switch (En voir plus).
I also found an issue with overlapping markup. Not illegal, just inconvenient. A 'name' (Théologiens de Salamanque) included a place name (Salamanque), with the result that you were unable to click on the place. I edited the xml file (moreri) to accommodate this.

Today I set up a list of what needs to be completed, and worked on biographies.

Went through Adam, BenigneWinslow, Bordeu, Bullart, Carlencas, Castellanus, Chambaud, Clusius, DeThouScaligerana, DeThouVol3. Began DeThouVol3Rigault. marked up chapterheadings/article divisions with title type="sub", and marked up marginal notes. removed white space. some marginalia is marked as reference (note type="marginaliaReference"), and some are marked as footnotes (note type="basPage"). Went over database design with Greg.

removed commas from place-ography persname type="alt" - started cleaning up person-ography chose Document (teissier.xml) to clean up white space, take out line breaks, and mark up marginalia(note type="marginalia"). commit. at revision 29. worked on cleaning person-ography. at revision 30.

Moved back to Turnip, it's done being rebuilt. Learned svn checkout, at revision 28. Went through data that was recovered from external hard drive compared metellus accounts in niceron, o'malley, and 2 source texts. to be transcribed. need to mark up segs in niceron tome10

Marked up Imperialis and Clusius accounts. Need to be added to xml folder, along with Argenterius. la_france has been changed to france in place-ography Bordeu biography done. - can return prosateurs bearnais interlibrary loan book

Now entered globally. Also, searched for "mélancolie" to add seg tags (search missed the accent in some texts previously)................ changed la_palestine --> palestine within place-ography.. changed within accounts as well........ marked up imperialis......... went over paragraph conflicts, discussion with greg............... created xml files for argenterius and clusius-notes........ currently in "xml to be added" folder, keeping "imperialis" company. began mark up (finished argenterius, clusius almost done - add in persName and placeName tags.....)

Today I transcribed Clusius' notes, and began Metellus' letter

segments in some latin texts. pelerinage-louanges-injures tagged globally. created 2 new themes, "education" and "rappelle_senat", added in from portal through to imperialis. These 2 new themes need to be added in accounts : benignewinslow, bordeu, chambaud, de thou vol3, bullart, dethou vol1, eloy, de thou vol4, guillemeau, feller, carlencas, de thou vol3 rigault, lacroixdumaine_et_verdier, moreri_english, moreri, niceron vol5, pare x 2, niceron vol10, senac......... Also, paragraph conflicts (with seg) need to be resolved.

Worked on markup of Imperialis - need to locate themes within the latin to continue.... Research out of Plinio Prioreschi's History of Medecine as it needs to be returned through interlibrary loan today. Fabri, Geminus, Guillemeau, Lancisi, Riolan, Rondelet, Zacchia. TOMORROW - finish inserted insult themes + check marking up of paragraphs

Wednesday I spent the morning in the library doing some transcription and research for biographies (Fabri, Clusius, Argenterius, Bottoni, Dryander)

Today I finished going through all of the accounts and modifying persName tags so that it is all consistent, using last names only for the tag. (Borgarucci, bottonus, pare, wechel, teissier, peucer, clusius, charles_quint, frisius, fabri, cassandre, boucher, rondelet, garetius, languet, thomasius, benigne_winslow, malatesta, sylvius, fernel, gessenius, metellus, riolan, joubert, fuchs, lemnius, duret, moreri, adam, fontanus, castellanus, zacchias, gemini) I also added the note tags into the place-ography :)

last Tuesday I globally added xml ids above the header as well as in page number tags. I also edited a few tags in the people xml file and in corresponding xml account files.

Today I drew up screenshots decided on divisions - by page ! reflected on titles for the accounts - should incorporate author and book title did xml proofing to see where paragraph overlaps with seg and will cause error Notes for me: portal, immediately before p.398 - overlap, p not inserted because it causes error - needs to be fixed teissier inserted p that was missing, no error senac - inserted p that was missing, no error sigaud_de_la_fond - p error - overlap with seg p.527 - no p because it causes error - needs to be fixed: ne se contentèrent point de le poursuivre comme meurtrier, ils le poursuivirent comme sacrilège au tribunal de l'inquisition. Today I read through lemnius, and then started filling in biographical information for the marked-up names :)

Today I marked up Charles de L'Ecluse, and searched through latin Thuanus texts for a more pertinant letter. - it is found in his notes added on: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=ucm.5325326485;view=image;q1=ecluse;start=1;size=100;page=root;seq=331;num=317. To be transcribed and marked up. found text with letter from mettelus to cassandre. Transcribe? Compare to letter published in Niceron. Mark up Niceron according to translation in O'Malley. Also, searched bayle's dictionnaire historique et critique...

Searched through clusius texts, found account of meeting between fuchs and vesalius... transcribed (took a while... in German and set in black letter typecast...Fraktur), will translate from German at home. Found Senac citation - transcribed. Marked up Senac - saved in xml to be added folder. Found one letter from Charles de l'Ecluse to de Thou in an online edition of histoire universelle.... transcribed. needs mark up.

April 3 - Transcribed and Marked up "strada", saved in the "xml to be added" folder. Searched through Traité des maladies des femmes ... Avec un catalogue chronologique ... Astruc, Jean, 1684-1766. for Vesalius vivisection, but he does not mention him by name. Some info on Bottonus. Only copies of Albertinus Bottonus' traite sur les maladies des femmes (for vivisection reference) is in latin, in libraries in europe (worldcat - de morbis muliebribus). Searched texts for the firsthand account recorded by Swabian poet Martinus Crusius of anecdote involving Fuchs and Vesalius. Found Guillaume Fabri's Observations Chirurgiques, used table of contents to try and locate vesalius anecdote... am going to have to go through page by page.

April 2 - search for schenkius, for kornmann, for bottonus... no luck. found some biographical info and a page on Vesalius in Benedictus Montanus, but could not find the epigrammi. Went through 9 collections of memoires association with the death of henri II to find mention of vesalius, but no such luck. Tried to find texts written by drs present at the time : M. Villiaume ...no M. Valeran – medecin ordinaire du roi ...no Louis Duret – docteur regent en la faculte de medecine a paris Rodolphe de l'Or - docteur regent en la faculte de medecine a paris ...no Iacques le Royl – chirurgien ordinaire du roi ...no Did, however, locate the account published by Strada explaining vesalius' warning to charles fifth about a short life. Saved, needs to be transcribed. Started sifting through Riolan's texts to find accusations of plagiarism.

This past weekend I completed a T.E.I. workshop offered by the DHSI ... Today I organised a short list of little questions to ask Greg on Friday. I also looked into the Niceron latin text, need to get translation / maybe Helene to look at it for mark up... marked up Lancisi, and Terilli, went through all xml texts to insert and toggle bibliographical comments as well as gap reason="sampling"/ to replace [...] , and inserted pb/ and cb/ ... found zwinger and levinus pdfs, must locate the accounts within these texts.

Server switched over. Transcribed, marked-up, and research Sigaud de La Fond, search Epitaphia Joco-Seria for cited epitaph (not there), noticed typo in places.xml (isle/ilse), researched Swertius.

Added in new themes to documents, updated citations chart, searched for a couple more sources.

Marked up Portal, Teissier, and La Croix du maine... all that's left are the latin accounts, as well as a couple new sources I may be able to dig up... Today, I finished marking up Niceron tome 5, and tome 10, I marked more places in Eloy, both Ambroise Pare accounts, and began Antoine Portal :)
